September/October ~ Tishri 5768 / 2008
Get ready for
the Jewish New Year & Other High Holydays.
In 2008 Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) begins
at sundown on Monday September 29 and ends at
nightfall on Wednesday October 1.
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, and falls
on the first and second days of the Jewish month
of Tishri (September/October). Rabbinic
literature describes this day as a day of
judgment. As such, it is a time for Jews to
review the mistakes they made in the past year
and to resolve to make improvements in the
upcoming year.
Prayer services are longer than on a regular
Shabbat or other Jewish holidays, and include
(on weekdays) the blowing of the Shofar (Ram's
Horn). On the afternoon of the first (or the
second, if the first was Saturday) day, a ritual
called tashlich is performed, in which sins are
"cast" into open water, such as a river, sea, or
lake.
Another popular observance during this holiday
is eating apples dipped in honey, a symbol of
our wish for a sweet new year. We also dip bread
in honey (instead of the usual practice of
sprinkling salt on it) at this time of year for
the same reason.

all other Jewish festivals by searching our
